There have been people taking surf trips to Costa Rica for decades now. There are numerous reasons why Costa Rica has been a very favorite destination for the surfer. Costa Rica is very stable, individuals are welcoming, expenses are fair, the country is clean, and the waves are good. Costa Rica has long been the steady and safe country for vacationing in Latin America. Aside from it being a nice safe location to visit, there are numerous stories of surfing journeys to Costa Rica in surfing periodicals and surfing videos exhibiting surf breaks like Playa Grande, Playa Hermosa, and Salsa Brava to name a few.

El Salvador has not had a plentiful track record with tousists in the past. This has translated to little being known in regards to the surfing in the area. Surf in El Salvador was generally unheard of by many people who surf and thoughts of El Salvador bring thoughts of the earlier civil war and problems with security. It has been over a decade since the civil war and El Salvador has long been committing to highways and infrastructure. Their government is wiping out the crime and issues from the past. One other point unknown to almost all people who surf is that the surf in El Salvador is world class.

The country of El Salvador is filled with right hand point waves. I recently read through a document comparing El Salvador to the coastline of Central California with the swell window of Oaxaca, Mexico and thought to myself that it was accurate. There are many surf breaks equivalent in standard to Rincon but with much less crowds and exposure to much bigger swells. El Salvador faces immediately south so has the best swell window in Latin America for south waves. Within our summer months, it's common to discover surf in the four to eight ft. range and even larger on strong days. Surf spots like Punta Roca, Sunzal, and Las Flores are among some of the favorites and generate long point waves. Additionally, there are a great many other waves to be found of superb quality.

There are several top reasons to make your next surfing holiday to El Salvador over Costa Rica. Initially, travel time to get from the airport is much shorter and you can actually be in the ocean half an hour from getting your baggage in the baggage claim. Additionally, the road system is far more advanced than that of the coastline of Costa Rica making it easier to hit many world-class surf breaks in one day where in Costa Rica you are normally stuck surfing nearby unless you are well prepared for a solid trip. Lodging and food are slightly cheaper so you'll save cash on your trip. Basic safety aspects are essential to many and the two nations are safe for travel so this must not be a factor in your determination. Finally, the surf and waves in El Salvador are world-class and with smaller crowds. The amount of point waves is surprising and the amount of world-class surf breaks is only discovered elsewhere in places similar to Indonesia.

Surfing in El Salvador is world-class and most likely will not be overlooked for long as a recognized surf destination. I went on my initial Costa Rica surf camp long ago and absolutely love the place and will be visiting in Costa Rica for countless years in the future. However, in 2010 I went on my first El Salvador surf trip and was completely blown away by the quantity of good quality surf spots and light crowds in the surf. I recommend surf travel to El Salvador to any people who surf.
